Within the life sciences industry, 3-D live virtual immersive environments address the financial challenges, global distribution of teams, and the human factor by providing learners with the ability to:

Have a sense of presence and immediacy with other people in learning environments.

Take part in dialogue using both voice and engaging nonverbal communications.

Contextualize learning content within authentic real-world environments, augmented environments, and improbable environments, which go beyond the bounds of possibility.

Save time away from the actual work environment.

This paper will review some of the unique attributes provided by 3-D live VIEs. In addition, this paper will explore how VIEs have been used in the past, as well as the potential for how VIEs can be used in the future to support life sciences learning applications.

The focus on collaboration is driven by the need to innovate, the need to bring together disparate individuals to solve complex problems, and the need to reach across traditional boundaries to obtain the necessary knowledge.

This white paper explores the elements of successful collaboration and describes how those elements are brought together in 3-D virtual immersive environments (3-D VIEs). The attributes and affordances of 3-D VIEs accelerate the collaboration process and provide those involved with the tools, recourses, and environment to foster collaboration and allow individuals to collectively apply their intellect.

The benefits of innovations in the field of life science include longer life expectancies, higher quality of life for millions of individuals and the reduction of fatalities associated with many diseases. Technology innovations associated with 3D virtual immersive learning environments will prove to be just as dramatic. The innovations will decrease the research to market timeline, reduce costs of training for events like trials and help ensure compliance. Just as medical technology has advanced, so has the technology surrounding learning and collaboration.

The creation of Title 21 CFR Part 11 compliant Learning Management Systems (LMS) have revolutionized how training in the life science industry is distributed and tracked. The development of instructionally sound, best of breed online course content has created e-learning modules which are used for training by FDA auditors, compliance officers and others, whenever they have Internet access. Now, the combination of those two innovations, with the three-dimensional virtual immersive environment (VIE) provide opportunities to have targeted training programs and meetings across distance in an interactive, compliant environment that allows the sharing of knowledge in a realistic, more personal way. The use of three-dimensional virtual environments for compliance training is the next logical evolution and extension of existing e-learning technologies and training—a convergence of 2D virtual classrooms, social media, Web 2.0 and three-dimensional graphics. It may seem like science fiction, but today 3D virtual immersive environments are the new method of working and collaborating in the life science industry.

The five-page piece details Merck’s entire experience, from what their collaboration challenges were; to what they used ProtoSphere for; to the training, collaboration, and knowledge management metrics they pulled out from their deployment.

“Traditional scientific conferences can be costly and time-consuming, and certainly aren’t ‘green’, with participants travelling long distances to attend. Are there advantages to meetings held in the virtual world, and can they really offer equally satisfying – or even better – experiences compared with the real world?”

The company tested 15 different virtual meeting and teaming platforms in an effort to find a cost-effective alternative to the real-world event. ProtonMedia’s ProtoSphere, a state-of-the-art virtual collaboration platform for businesses, was ultimately selected for the project.

A global pharmaceutical company wanted to improve its recruiting ROI by increasing how long MBA candidates stayed with the company, boosting the number who became company leaders, and creating a more consistent and repeatable onboarding process. Internal research indicated the company could achieve these goals by improving connectedness and collaboration among MBA candidates.

The company believed that these requirements could be met through the use of a 3-D virtual world. One 3-D world platform for business was already being piloted inside the company, ProtonMedia’s ProtoSphere. The company worked with ProtonMedia to jointly develop a new 3-D social network, which is now used to manage onboarding, training, meetings, and corporate communications; and foster a stronger sense of community among the company MBA candidates around the world.

Every year, a top five global pharmaceutical company holds a three-day technology symposium for about 500 of its R&D scientists and vendors. Poster sessions, a traditional pharmaceutical industry approach, drive the event. However, facing six-figure costs and ongoing logistical challenges, several of the company’s employees requested alternatives to the traditional symposium.

The company’s team developed a use case and partnered with ProtonMedia to create the pharmaceutical industry’s first virtual technology symposium. Built in ProtonMedia’s ProtoSphere, the project fleshed out the functionality, business value, and strategic potential of virtual poster sessions that accurately replicated the real-world symposium experience.
